Philmont Crew 716-110 (July 2012)
Troop 414 is sending a 12-man crew to Philmont Scout Ranch for an expedition
from July 16-30, 2012! Our crew will consist of 8 Scouts and 4 adults. Philmont
Scout Ranch covers approximately 214 square miles of rugged mountain wilderness
in the Sangre de Cristo (Blood of Christ) range of the Rocky Mountains in northern
New Mexico. It is considered the ultimate wilderness backpacking experience in Scouting.

The expected total trek fee will be $1220 per person ($740 per participant Philmont
fees + approximately $380 for travel + $100 for spending money at the trading post).
The per participant fee payment schedule is as follows:
- June 1, 2011 -- $100 (Philmont fee)
- October 1, 2011 -- $320 (Philmont fee)
- March 1, 2012 -- $320 (Philmont fee)
- June 25, 2012 -- $380 (Pre-trip traveling expenses payment/collection)
Individual fitness training is required and will be augmented by:
- Weekly 'Miracle Mile' training at Klein HS stadium – Ascent/descent of stadium
stairways alternating with several laps of brisk walking around the stadium track,
ALL while carrying a backpack of increasing weight as the pre-Philmont year progresses.
This will take place rain or shine, hot or cold... as may occur on the trail!
- Semi-monthly Crew meetings and targeted skill training sessions which will include any of the following:
- Map & compass/orienteering skills
- Afternoon/evening camp arrival and bedding-down procedure
- Morning camp packing up and departure procedure
- Explanation and practice at all duty roster positions
- Philmont-style cooking
- Setting up and using bear bags
- Hiking etiquette and strategies (e.g. caterpillaring)
- Proper fitting and wearing of backpack
- Strategies for efficient and lightweight packing of backpack
- Discussions and demonstrations of appropriate clothing and layering strategies
- Crew shopping trips to learn about and purchase needed gear
- Proper boots, boot care, and foot care
- Wilderness first aid
- Proper wilderness sanitation
- Leave No Trace training
- Team building
- Physical fitness status evaluations
- Monthly hikes and backpacking training treks, including overnight campouts on the trail as schedules and opportunities allow.
Crew members are expected to attend most, if not all, meetings, training
sessions, hikes and backpacking campouts, in addition to remaining active
in troop meetings and activities.
